He was defended by a well-known Bolton solicitor, named Richardson, who was nicknamed, 'Fat Dick' by frequenters of the Police Courts, because of his tall and slim proportions. Mr Cobbett, barrister, of Manchester, represented the Treasury. At the end of the proceedings John was committed to Kirkdale Jail (Liverpool) to await trial on the charge of murdering his uncle.
