Here are the tools and repositories I use to create and manage my genealogy research
Tools
- Rootsmagic 10 – The genealogy database I now store my data in having migrated from The Mater Genealogist
- GedSite – The software from John Cardinal used to generate this website from a GEDCOM export from RootsMagic. When I was still using The Master Genealogist I used his similar Second Site software,
- Online Repository Assistant (ORA) – Another great tool from John Cardinal. It speeds up extracting data from online repositories, Ancestry and FindMyPast to paste into Rootsmagic, etc.
- Gedcom Publisher – Another tool from John Cardinal that convert your genealogy data into an e-book. I havent used it much as yet but do intend to spend more time on it.
- SQLiteSpy – A tool for manipulating and reporting on the RootsMagic data held in the SLQLite database
- SQLite Tools for RootsMagic – A guide to using database tools for manipulating and reporting on the RootsMagic data held in the SLQLite database
- Family Tree Analyzer – A tool tht analyzes a GEDCOM file for issues and research suggestions
Repositories
- Ancestry – The service most used for access to records and DNA matching. It has a copy of my RootsMagic tree. I make my updates in RM and it can then upload the changes to Ancestry.
- My Ancestry Tree – A direct link to my tree if you have an Ancestry account.
- Find My Past – An alternative repository to Ancestry for lots of data. It used to be the go to place for Cheshire data but Ancestry is now overtaking it.
- The Genealogist
- Lancashire OPC – A great source of transcribed parish registers for Lancashire
