- [S806] Herbert J Westbrook, , ' There was a very nice walk from Tom Paine's Bridge to Walton Arches between the Old Quay Canal and the old river bed. Respecting Tom Paine's Bridge, Mr. Walter Bennett, of Bruche Farm, Paddington, recently told me an interesting story. His grandfather Wm. Bennett, was left an orphan, and lived with a Mr. Barnes, a big cattle dealer, who took an interest in young Bennett, and who grazed a lot of land at Lower Walton. Young Bennett became engaged to a Miss Swinton, who lived at Walnut Tree Farm (now occupied by Mr. James Whitlow as tenant). The young lady had a dowry of 100 pounds, and such was young Bennett's independency of spirit, that he made a vow that he would not marry until he had saved up an equal amount. Consequently he saved up his wages, or the balance of them, banking his savings in a secret crevice or hole in the wall of Tom Paine's Bridge, until the desired amount was reached, whereupon the wedding duly took place.'.
