- [S799] Connie Thomas, "Email from Connie Thomas (21/2/2003) #1," e-mail to Alan Bennett, 21 February 2003, --, Hello Alan: My name is Edith Constance Brough Thomas(Connie) from Meredith, New Hmapshire, USA, but born in Chippawa, Ontario, Canada now part of Greater Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. I found your site this am while browsing the Cheshire list at Rootsweb. The entry you posted 1 Jan. 2003. I do not belong to any of the lists except for the new Odd Rode one but I do browse, Cheshire, Lancashire Gen, Leigh, Manchester and Stafforshire looking for my Brough, Brooks, Cheer and Stubbs ancestors. I do not think your Brooks or Stubbs are part of mine but your Broughs certainly are. I also noted that you lived in Lowton. The whole time I was growing up when ever my Father(William Brough, born 1 Aug. 1905, 23 Sandy Lane, Lowton, son of Henry and Jane Brooks Brough) spoke of his life in England before emmigrating to Sydnedy Mines, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1914, he always talked of St. Mary's, Lowton, Leigh, Lancashire. He never made a return visit to England, but in 1978 my sister Marion, myslef and our Aunt, Lily Brough Taylor(my Father's older sister) did visit Leigh and did go to Lowton to see were the family had lived. We had cousins and second cousins living in Leigh and Tyldesley. We still have cousins and second cousins in Leigh, part of the Tyldesley family have moved to Dumfriesshire, Scotalnd. When I saw your Brough names France, Hannah, Henry, Mary Jane they were all familiar to me and names I have been researching. That particular Thomas Brough birn abt 1859 or 1860 in Macclesfield is not. I was so excited to find all this imformation. I have dates that slightly different from yours and I am willing to share what I have if your are interested and I can fill in a few blanks you have and clarify a few things.Your work is very impressive. I am not as good as you. I started Brough genealogy quite a few years ago and then dropped it for a while but now that I am retired I have been working on it very hard for the last three years. I sent for many birth and marriage certificates, haven't had too much luck with the death ones yet.Henry Brough is my Grandfather, he was the uncle of Enos Brown, born, abt 1871 and living with him in 1891 census as a lodger, at Lowton Commom, Lowton. Enos's parents where William Brown and Jane Brough. Jane's birth certificate #FC301955, Registration District, Birth in Sub-district of Congleton, in the counties of Chester and Stafford births 1844 #42 Born 18 September 1844, Congelton. Father Charles Brough, collier. Mother Hannah Brough formerly Cheer. I knew Henry's Father was Charles as I have the orginal marriage certificate of his 2nd marriage to my Grandmother Janes Brooks. The marriage was 6 June 1892 Primitive Methodist Chapel< Lowton, in district og Leigh, in the County of Lancaster. Henry was 33 yrs old. a widower, coal minere and lived at Prescott"s Houses, Lowton. Jnae Brooks was 22 yrs old, a spinster, livingat Lowton Common, Lowton. They both signed themselves and were married bu certificate. Witnesses were Jonathan Cotterill and Alice Brooks. I haven't researched them yet, but Cotterill is a name that is prevelant in the Biddulph area of Staffordshire that Henry was born in. I have Henry's birth certificate stating he was born 15 September 1858 in Harriseahead, Stadmoreslow, Stafford. Parents, Charles Brough and Hannah Brough formerly Cheer. He is a coal miner. #PAS585445/1 Registration Distirct Wolstanton, Birth in the Sub-district of Tunstall and in the county of Stafford. That is all I will write for now. If you are interested in more please contact me. I am in the process of trying to find a birth date for Henry's Father Charles, I believe he was born in Buglawton, Cheshire abt. 1824. From his marriage certificate his Father's name is Ralph, haven't found anyhting on him yet.I believe Charles had a 2nd marriage about 1869 or 1870 his wife Hannah died in 1868 in Harriseahead, Stafford. It is a little difficlut to do some of the research from abroad. Thank you so much for allthe information. I have more for you. Best Regards, Connie Brough Thomas.
