Other Facts
| Witness | 23 March 1905 | Mrs, Wyley, witnessed the biography of Mary Elizabeth Hancocks : On March 23, 1905, Mary (who was living away from home as a domestic servant, visited her parents home at 7 Old Priory, Birkenhead. They lodged with Mr and Mrs Storey. Another lodger was Mrs Wyley. Her mother went out for the evening leaving Mary, Elsie and William with their father. He had been drinking.A scream for help was heard and Mrs Storey and Mrs Wyley rushed in, follwed by Mrs Hancocks. They found William and Mary lying across the bed, and Mary cried out "I am choking". William picked up a pocket knife and threatened to kill his wife; but she ran out, followed by Mary, into Mrs Wyley's room. William tried to force his way in, but afterwards became more quiet, and his wife escaped out of the house.Mrs Storey and Mrs Wyley went downstairs; but before they went William told Mary to go and look after the children. She refused at first, but at last went.William followed and minutes later the girl was again heard screaming. When neighbours investigated a second time, William brushed past them on the stairs and rushed into the street. Mary then came staggering out of the bedroom and collapsed on the landing, bleeding badly from a stab wound in the temple. She died in hospital a week later. Hancocks' penknife, covered in blood was found in the bedroom. There was a dramatic sequel to the knife attack when the fleeing Williams realising the full horror of what he had done, attempted to commit suicide by leaping into the river Mersey at the nearby "Woodside ferry" but, was rescued by workmen and taken to hospital in the same ambulance as his dying daughter. Later on his way to Walton gaol he told officers "I must have been mad when I did it, I thought a lot of her" and he claimed His wife was the cause of it all, "She was always harping on about money and causing me to break teetotal". |
