He saw active service in France and was evacuated from the Dunkirk beaches in 1940. He later served in England. He was lucky to be party of the guard at Balmoral Castle in 1944 when his regiment looked after King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. He was later honoured with a pesonal invite to watch the Royal Pantomime at Windsor Castle. It was 'Old Mother Red Riding Hood' starring the future Queen and her sister, the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret; Manchester Regiment (5th Batallion.)
