| Biography | 1891 | In 1891 Alfred Rathbone and his brother met James McNeil Whistler (JW) and Beatrix Whistler at his Edgar's rooms in London. Following this, and instructed by his father, Alfred Rathbone bashfully sent JW a book of his verse, collected and privately printed by Philip Rathbone, entitled Varying moods expressed in various verse: it was published by Unwin Bros., Chilworth and London, probably earlier in 1891. He wrote to JW: 'The pieces we at home consider most characteristic are ticked in pencil in the index' [#05106]. JW described it as 'dainty' and 'charming' [#09387]. JW's copy is included with some two hundred of his other books in Glasgow University Library.6 |
