Interesting note: Catharine Ann Brough Hind states in her Hind Research Reports (pages 232, 234-235) that 'Edmund [in his will of 1569] misremembers his younger children.' This is supported by the fact that Edmund mentions in his will that one of his two sons is 'Edmund,' when in fact his two sons are Robert and Thomas, both of whom are mentioned in the will of their grandfather, Robert Burgh, made on 13 May 1547 and probated on 14 May 1548 (see FHL Film # 95303).Also, Catharine Ann Brough Hind has stated: 'To his wife Joan, Edmund leaves a fine house with 'a fyrechamber' (a room solely for sitting beside the fire) and 'two new rooms'. The two older sons are independent...recall that Robert their grandfather left for Edmund a grey gelding, and to Thomas a neat and a lamb. Whether these elder sons were away performing military service or studying we know not, nor whether there are younger ones [or younger sons]....' (RBFO Hind Research Reports, pages 234-235.)1 |

Catharine Ann Brough Hind also mentions this information in her Hind Research Reports, pages 226, 232, and 476.In addition, the book 'A List of Families in the Archdeaconry of Stafford, 1532-3' (FHL book # 942.46, B4sc, Ser.4, V.8, page30) identifies a William Burghe of Leek Frith whose family consists of: 'William Burghe, Joan, uxor, John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Catherine, Thomas.' This may be the same William Burgh who married Margaret. If so, this William Burgh possibly first married Joan and had children: John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Catherine and Thomas; and later married Margaret who had children: William John, Richard and Margaret.' Further research is needed to prove or disprove this possible genealogical relationship.1 |

| Biography | | The father of Ralph (Raphe) Burgh was apparently Thomas Burgh (Broughe). Ralph is mentioned in his father's Will. The Will of Thomas Burgh (Broughe) was dated 8 June 1569 and probated on 7 April 1570 (see FHL Film # 95309. Catharine Ann Brough Hind also mentions this Will in her Hind Research Reports, pages 234, 476). According to the Will (and the way names were spelled in the Will), 'Thomas Broughe' of 'Water House' within the 'Parish of Leek' mentioned his wife 'Margaret' and four of his children: 'Grace', 'Robte' [Robert], 'Raphe' [Ralph], and 'Anthoney' [Anthony].'The marriage of Rauffe (Ralph) Burgh probably occurred when he was in his late 30's or early 40's. This situation--particularly for men living at this period of time and for those living in and around the Leekfrith--has been explained by Catharine Ann Brough Hind as follows: 'Generally, country-men...of farming and business ways of life did not...marry before early middle-age. Many court[ed] for years.... Generally speaking it has to do with property...parents (especially widowed mothers) have to be taken into consideration and/or money has to be saved to buy-out brothers and sisters or to get established in ones own farm or business. ...Girls [today] would never stand for being asked to play second-fiddle and [many do not] care...about the formality of marriage....'
