In 1574, Thomas and his widowed mother agreed with John Cooke of Tottesmore that he pay a dowry of 40 [pounds] for a marriage between Thomas and Ann Cooke. The sons of Thomas and Ann were Lionel and Richard, for both of whom he made provision in a marriage dower for Anne Wilkinson of Cheshire, whose sons were Lionel, Thomas and Martin, born between 1620 and 1640. Middlehulme belonged entirely to the Broughs and was entailed from eldest son to eldest son....'Lionel Burgh's birth and burial dates were originally given in a research report by Catharine Ann Brough Hind to the RBFO in August-September 2000. (Hind Research Reports to the RBFO, pages 448-456.) However, the burial date (of 1643) was subsequently revised by Mrs. Hind in her Hind Research Reports to the RBFO on November 8, 2000, p.467.Earlier family group record on the family of Lionel Burgh (Brough) and Anne Wilkinson appeared in the 1988 RBFO book, page 46.1 |

Other Facts
| Biography | | The birth date of Richard Burgh (Brough) was provided by Catharine Ann Brough Hind to the RBFO in August-September 2000. Also, the July 27, 1618 Brough/Wilkinson marriage indenture settlement and the 1668 Chancery Proceedings of Brough vs Brough court case states that this Richard Burgh was a 'brother' to Lionel Burgh (who married Anne Wilkinson and whose parents were Thomas Burgh and Anne Cooke). (See Hind Research Reports to the RBFO, pages 69-70.5, 344 and 448-456. The 'Chancery Proceedings of Brough vs Brough: 1668' was originally obtained from the Brough Family Archives in Staffordshire by Catharine Ann Brough Hind and sent to the RBFO on 17 May 1986.)The burial date of Richard Burgh (Brough) can be found in the the Brough Staffordshire Burial Index (in possession of the RBFO, February 2001) which lists a Richard Burgh of New Grange, Leek, who was buried on 19 March 1635/1636. See FHL film # 1040765. However, RBFO Genealogists could not locate any will for this Richard Burgh (Brough) as of March 2001.The estimated marriage date of Richard Burgh (Brough) has been commented on as follows by Catharine Ann Brough Hind: 'I pondered time and again what would be happening back on the Fryth [of Leek] and around M'hlm [Middlehulme or Middle Hulme, Leek] in particular [during the 1600's]. Look again at the marriage indenture drawn up by Thomas [Brough] and William Wilkinson in 1618 [see Hind Research Reports to the RBFO, page 69,] and reiterated in the 1668 [Chancery Proceedings of] Brough vs Brough [see Hind Research Reports to the RBFO, page 70.5]...that M'hlme is assigned to Lionel and Anne daughter of William Wilkinson '90 yr reversion to Richard if he so long live; then to the descendants of him and...his wife, or of any subsequent legal wife.' So this eldest son Richard was already provided for. But what, where and when?... Richard of New Grange, interred March 19 [1635/1636] is likely candidate.... In the light of that provision for ninety years I shall look harder for what pertained within the family and the Fryth in 1708. This was a common-enough device, meant to safeguard an estate from loss to the family through failure of heirs dying out. It was however sometimes enforced or followed-up by descendants of descendants. Richard will have had his copy of the deed and his heirs would hold fast to it 'just in case.' ...Any descendants of Richard would be acutely aware of that ninety years; for them it was the equivalent of money-in-the-bank...and of course they would have their own triparte copy of what was involved and where. Looking back at the Thomas [Burgh]/Ann Cooke indenture we see that Thomas himself had been bounded to pay to his (unnamed) brothers and sisters sums once assigned to his late brother. It occurs to me that the term is more usually ninety and nine years. Had Richard been provided for nine years earlier and that allowed for? Does this transport us back to a marriage c1609? (Hind Research Reports to the RBFO, page 510, 23 Feb 2001.)Research Note: Richard Brough (b.abt.1579) may have been the Richard Brough who married a Margrett Walker of Blithfield, Staffordshire, on 20 Sep 1609 (FHL film # 1040829). This Richard Brough and Margrett Walker apparently resided in or visited several different parishes and had at least three additional children in Staffordshire: Ralph Broughe, chr. 8 Oct 1610 in Blithfield (FHL film # 1040829), Thomas Brough, chr. 16 May 1613 in Milwich (see LDS Ordinance Index), and John Broughe, chr. 25 Feb 1616 in Stowe-by-Chartley (see LDS Ordinance Index). At the present time (30 March 2001), RBFO Genealogists are conducting research on this and other possibilities regarding the spouse and children of Richard Brough (b.abt.1579).Research comments by Catharine Ann Brough Hind to the RBFO (taken from Hind Research Reports to the RBFO):On 5 August 1992, Catharine Ann Brough Hind informed the RBFO of the following: 'Mr. Brown and I have extracted from it [or Brough archives, sources and records held at the Staffordshire Record Office] all the most obvious clues and pointers. It was mostly from this that we try to steer the RBFO towards the Richard Brough, brother of Lionel of Middlehulme ob 1653, and the proposal that he is the same Richard at Calton Moor whose son Robert received a bequest from a kinsman around that time. Further documentation of Richard brother of Lionel is in the Brough vs Brough chantry case [of] 1668.' (Hind Research Reports to the RBFO, page 210.)On 12 June 1993, Catharine Ann Brough Hind informed the RBFO of the following: 'Richard son of Thomas Brough of Middlehulme n c1585 [is] named in the marriage settlement of Lionel and Anne c 1630....and again in Brough v Brough 1668.' (Hind Research Reports to the RBFO, page 243.)In early 2000, Catharine Ann Brough Hind informed the RBFO of the following (which was published in the July 2000 RBFO book 'The Broughs of Staffordshire, England and their English, American and Australian Descendants' page 54): 'John, eldest son of Thomas of Middlehulme, was born c. 1508 and succeeded there as 'a leaseholder of land' as did Thomas, born to John and his wife Johanne, c. 1538. Middlehulme belonged entirely to the Broughs and was entailed from eldest son to eldest son....'In August-September 2000, Catharine Ann Brough Hind informed the RBFO of the following: 'Quoting from the 1668 [Chancery Proceedings of Brough vs Brough court case, we read that] Richard had 'dependants'.... In the light of wording of similar provisos I think it refers to children born in marriage to Richard...and excludes those 'on the body of any other woman....' [This is] important for the RBFO. This Richard had dependants [or] descendants; he was an ancestor!' (Hind Research Reports to the RBFO, pages 70-70.5 and 448-456.)On 26 February 2001, Catharine Ann Brough Hind informed the RBFO of the following: 'Richard Brough of New Grange was buried on March 19 [1635/1636]. New Grange is virtually on M'hlme land and if Lionel senior, son of Thomas, died in 1644 that would dovetail with that of an elder brother a decade before.... (Hind Research Reports to the RBFO, page.514.)On 8 March 2001, Catharine Ann Brough Hind informed the RBFO of the following: 'Some other thoughts on Richard, elder son of Thomas. Considering whether Richard of New Grange, who died [1635/1636] might be he, and taking [this item] into consideration: 1611, a grant of Fee-Farm to Thomas Brough of Middlehulme to Sir Christopher Hatton of Clayhill Essex. This is surely a farm on the Fryth [in the Leekfrith area] and seems to be other than M'hulme. Could it be New Grange? (Hind Research Reports to the RBFO, p.516.)On 9 April 2001, Catharine Ann Brough Hind informed the RBFO of the following: 'One little interesting point: You will remember that Richard Brough died at New Grange [buried 19 March 1635/1636] and that Thomas [Brough] and Margaret (Adams), my ancestors, [had] their first daughter Ruth, baptised [26 November] 1663 ‘of Nether Hulme.' Add to this that I read that New Grange is probably Nether Hulme. Interestingly, within that period the Hulme family and the Mountfords were principal people there.' (Hind Research Reports to the RBFO, page 551, 9 April 2001.)1 |

Thomas was initially 'a leaseholder of land' at Winyates, and whilst sons or serving men worked his fields Thomas, as a literate and able man well able to undertake the work of administration and government, achieved the position of Gentleman with the right to use and siplay the Brough coat-of-arms [of 'Argent, on a saltire sable, five swans of the first']. ...John, eldest son of Thomas of Middlehulme, was born c. 1508 and succeeded there as 'a leaseholder of land'....'In the 2000 RBFO book 'The Broughs of Staffordshire, England and their English, American and Australian Descendants' page 54, Catharine Ann Brough Hind of England states the following: 'John, eldest son of Thomas of Middlehulme, was born c. 1508 and succeeded there as 'a leaseholder of land' as did Thomas, born to John and his wife Johanne, c. 1538. 1508 and succeeded there as 'a leaseholder of land'....'.1 |

Other Facts
| Biography | | Information that supports the individuals, dates, places and relationships on this Family Group Record was obtained from research reports send to the RBFO during 1977 to 1989 by David Bethell, a professional genealogist living in Leek, Staffordshire, England. In 1990, Warren D. Brough, an RBFO Genealogist, compiled this information onto family group sheets and submitted it to the Medieval Families Ancestral File Operations Unit of the Family History Department of the LDS Church in Salt Lake City, Utah. More information on the early Broughs of Staffordshire can be found in the RBFO book 'The Broughs of Staffordshire, England, and their English, American and Australian Descendants,' July 2000, pages 7-44.Research Notes:David Bethell states in his research report of 1 May 1978 (contained in Bethell's Research Reports to the RBFO, pages 50-51) the following: 'I have gathered together information concerning the de Burgh or de Burgo family from Staffordshire localities from about 1150 to 1600, and have been able to establish in some detail the pedigree of the main de Burgh family, which has been found to derive from a locality called Burgh in the parish of Ranton near Stafford. The earliest member of the family identified is...living about 1150 to 1200, and his descent peiced together without interruption from then to about 1320, when the main male line fails, and the central estates pass by an heiress to [another] family. The remainder of the family, can be traced, if fitfully, in the same area, to about 1420, and then disappear. No trace can be found of the de Burghs until they re-appear in Leek about 1500. Nevertheless, we can be confident that the Leek family considered itself descended from the earlier de Burghs, since they used the same coat of arms found attributed to the early de Burghs in the 14th century.' Further information supporting this conclusion--including wills of Burghs/Broughs living in the Leek area during the 1500's and 1600's--was presented by Bethell to the RBFO in Bethell's Research Reports to the RBFO, pages 50-77.In this family group record Robert and Thomas Burgh are listed as brothers and their father is identified as Richard de Burgh. However, some researchers have suggested that Robert Burgh may have been the son of Thomas Burgh and that Thomas Burgh was the son of Richard de Burgh. Interestingly, David Bethell has stated the following about this matter: 'Richard [the father] could well be the same Richard as mentioned in the bede roll in 1532-3 (whether alive or dead), in which case Thomas Brough of Leekfrith is immediately identifiable as his son. ...The bede roll of 1632-3 is a difficult source for us to use; clearly anyone listed must have been born by 1533, but since it is a list of persons for whom prayers are to be said, living and dead are intermingled in the lists without any indication of who was actually living. Equally, only some families appear on the roll. Thus at Leek we have the full family of the religious Robert Brough and Joan his wife of Chapel House, but no mention of his brothers. Thomas Brough, whom we think to be their father, may have been dead by 1532-3, but it is curious that Robert and Joan should not have paid for prayers to be said for his soul.' (See Bethell's Research Reports to the RBFO, pages 239-241.)On November 15, 2001, Catharine Ann Brough Hind wrote the following comments to the RBFO: 'I believe that our missing period [which lacks substantial documentation of the Brough family within the Leek area] is the 15thc, and in this we are in company with many old families, especially of Staffordshire. The root cause being the 14thc Black Death when whole communities were decimated and what was left of a dynasty forced to move on. Their one asset might be that relatives might have survived and given them shelter, employment and a chance to regroup. I believe that our forefathers great asset at that time was their family's centuries of representing the Abbotts of Hilton and Dieulacres Abbeys, both within Leek Parish and North Staffordshire. What else explains their positions as Abbey lay officials, on Abbey properties? That they have the Abbey Seal (probably the key rather than the Seal of Authority) following the Reformation? Let alone their benefit by grant, by purchase or lease, of some seven properties of Dieulacres former estate ownership.'For supporting and additional information about this individual and family, see the book 'The History of the Broughs of Staffordshire, England, and their English, American and Australian Descendants', by the Richard Brough Family Organization (RBFO), 2004, p.23-44.1 |

How fortunate we are that so many Broughs still shew. I ponder how it is that in a family so resolute in its use of patronyms we have no such habit for Reginald and only one grandchild named Reyne...who is however not on [the family group record of Thomas Burgh, born 1480, died 1550]. Is this because he (or she) is not named in Thomas's...will [of] 1550?'For supporting and additional information about this individual and family, see the book 'The History of the Broughs of Staffordshire, England, and their English, American and Australian Descendants', by the Richard Brough Family Organization (RBFO), 2004, p.23-44.1 |

More information on the early Broughs of Staffordshire can be found in the RBFO book 'The Broughs of Staffordshire, England, and their English, American and Australian Descendants,' July 2000, pages 7-44.Research Note: In July 2000, the RBFO published the following statement in its book 'The Broughs of Staffordshire, England, and their English, American and Australian Descendants': Questions have been raised about the medieval ancestry of Ralph de Limesi (born about 1055). For example, in the 1980's, an RBFO professional genealogist living in England documented that the 'Brough' surname of 'de Burgo' was adopted by Philip fitz Bishop and his brother Hamon in the late 1100's. According to this genealogist: 'In 1631,' historian 'John Weever' stated in his Ancient Funerall Monuments that 'the monks of Hertford Priory report[ed],' Ralph de Limesi was the 'son' of 'Adela' (or Adelaide), who 'was the daughter of Robert I, Duke of Normandy and a full sister of William the Conqueror.' (See pages 5-7 in the 1988 RBFO book.) However, in 1990, an official of the Medieval Families Ancestral File Operations Unit of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City wrote to the RBFO and stated: 'We do not feel that the mother of Ralph de Limesi is Adela, the sister of William the Conqueror, but that it might be Matilda, the half-sister through his mother. We are enclosing some of the references that we have used for our research. 'Europaischen Kayser-und Koniglichen Houser Historische und Genealogische Erlauterung' is the only source that shows Mathilde married to Lambert de Leusii. We feel that the book may have been misprinted and the spelling of Lamberts surname might be Lemsi. After studying the documentation available to us, some of which is enclosed, we feel that the basic rules of inheritance tend to refute your conclusions [that the mother of Ralph de Limeis is Adela, the sister of William the Conqueror]. There is no proof either way.' In 1993 and 1994, the RBFO had another professional genealogist living in England conduct further research into this problem. On May 26, 1994, this genealogist sent an extensive, detailed research report to the RBFO which contained the following summary statements: 'The first thing I ought to say is that I am now quite definite that Ralph was not William's [the Conqueror] nephew. ...All one can say at this point is that the de Limesies were a family of considerable importance (though not of first importance) in the vicinity of Rouen.... ...To construct a tentative family tree, I would need to examine a good many more of the Norman family charters. ...I would be happy to carry out further research along the lines I have mentioned...on the understanding that this research may yield no more than a list of the members of the de Limesy family in pre-conquest Normandy, with no indications of relationships.' At the present time [August 1996] the RBFO Executive Committee has decided not to pursue the matter of Ralph de Limesi's ancestry. For supporting and additional information about this individual and family, see the book 'The History of the Broughs of Staffordshire, England, and their English, American and Australian Descendants', by the Richard Brough Family Organization (RBFO), 2004, p.23-44.1 |
