(Son) Census185130 March 1851 He was listed as the son of Henry Beckett in the 1851 census at Cheetham, Manchester, Lancashire, England, .4,2
Occupation30 March 1851 Frederick Garner Beckett was an apprentice engineer on 30 March 1851.2
Biography*circa 1855 From Made in Hamilton - 19th Century Industrial Trail:
The Beckett Engine and Boiler Works once covered almost this entire block. Its 109-foot tall chimney was a local landmark. One city newspaper was proudly reported in 1863 that Beckett steam engines provided the power for 21 local factories. They also built boilers and engines for agricultural, forest and marine use.
Attracted by the railway boom, Henry Beckett Sr. brought his sons Henry Jr. and Frederick to Hamilton in the mid-1850s. Previously, they had years of practical experience building engines and boilers in England.
Frederick set out on an ambitious expansion programme after becoming the firm's senior partner a few years later. The foundry's workforce grew to 120 workers between 1863 and 1871. Like many factory bosses of the 19th century, the Becketts did not don white collars once success was achieved. One reporter happily noted that the Becketts, themselves "mechanics of the first order," were a common site on the shop floor, "Mingling in the busy throng with upturned sleeves and exercising a personal supervision of the business."
Hamilton's reputation as a major Canadian textile centre began in 1882 when the Ontario Cotton Company began production in the renovated remains of the Beckett Foundry. Under the name Canadian Cottons, this company tore down the old foundry in 1920 and erected a large new plant a block to the north. This mill operated until 1959.
From Hamilton Harbour 1826-1901, Chapter 8 "Boom Town Days" 1854, paragraph 3:
On the subject of machinery, a new foundry and engine works was being erected on James Street North at the corner of Simcoe Street, occupying some two acres. The principals in this organization were Frederick Garner Beckett,Henry Beckett Sr.,Henry Beckett Jr. and Samuel Beckett, who had come from Manchester. Their plant, which would proudly bear the name "Atlas Works" over its main entrance, consisted of a number of substantial brick buildings. There was a foundry, 100 x 40 ft., machine shop, 3 stories, 120 x 50 ft., finishing dept., 2 stories, 50 x 36 ft., boiler shop, 2 stories, 170 x 50 ft., blacksmith shop, 80 x 36 ft. and a combined wood and pattern shop of 2 stories, 120 x 40 ft. Power was supplied by two 35 horse-power engines and it was expected that about 120 men and boys would be employed.5,6
Death*circa 21 March 1899 He died circa 21 March 1899 at Englewood, New Jersey, USA.7
