He was educated at The Friends' School, Ackworth, Yorkshire. He was subsequently articled to his father as a Chartered Accountant. He passed the Intermediate examination. He joined the Inns of Court O.T.C. on 14 December 1914. He obtained a commission on the 26th April 1915. He served with the BEF in France and Flanders from 30 November 1915. He contracted pneumonia and was invalided home. He returned to France in January 1917. He was twice wounded in June and gassed in July, being sent home on sick leave. He returned to France and was killed in action.³
