Other Facts
| Biography | | --John William - known as "William" - has his birthday recorded under 17 February in his first wife`s birthday album. Although John William was born illegitimate, his mother Priscilla Brown, daughter of Charles and Ann Brown, married William Bickerton two years later, and John William was brought up with his three Bickerton brothers and three Bickerton sisters. His grandfather got into trouble for keeping John William away from North Rode school in about 1871. He lived on Park House Farm. (The Daintrey family owned The Grange at North Rode at this period, to which William`s family was attached. Formerly The Grange had been part of the estate of the Earl of Crewe. In 1913 the house acquired by Captain R. G. Peel.) John William spent some time working in Hereford. In the 1891 census "William Brown" (as he was known) was "Head Gardener" living with his wife and Harry at Garden Cottage, North Rode, as Sarah Jane expected the birth of Ivy. Her mother Mary Farrier née Inett was staying with the family to help at the birth. Later he was Head Gardener at Middleton Hall, Warks (c. May 1891-September 1899). May 5th 1891: "William, Sarah, Sarah Ellen, Albert, Mother and children all went to Middleton their new home today" (Annie Lydia Farrier`s diary). In the period 1886-1924 Middleton Hall was the residence of the Egbert de Hamel family, as tenants, not owners, after which it was bought by a Mr John Averill in 1925. In the 1901 census he is recorded as "Head Gardener", aged 39, resident at "Norton, Stafford", in Little Wyrley, near Brownhills, Staffs at Wyrley Grove, owned by the Hussey family. Subsequently he was appointed Head Gardener at the City Mental Hospital, Winson Green, Birmingham (c. 1905-6). The grounds of the City Mental Hospital were virtually a farm and market garden, with cows, watercress beds and vegetable cultivation. He regularly judged horticultural shows. Alice Brown recorded in 1974: "When Middleton Hall changed hands, William Brown was ejected to make way for the new owner`s retinue. Through Ryder`s Seeds, with whom he did much business, William was given an interview at the City Mental Hospital, Lodge Road. He got a good reference from the seedsman, so he got the job. They had been very happy at Middleton. When in Birmingham, Sarah Jane developed a stomach growth [cancer of the womb] and died. Later, before he remarried in 1918, William Brown asked permission of Ivy and her husband Albert to marry Elizabeth Louisa Hastilow ("Beth", 1879-1963) and received it. John William grew orchids for the doctors` buttonholes, and also specialized in dahlias, and died in 1929 probably of a stroke while tending vines in one of the greenhouses in the summer heat. Buried by second wife Beth in Handsworth cemetery, first wife Sarah Jane buried in Uplands cemetery, Smethwick. According to granddaughter Hilda (2004), he was a gentle and very kind man, like his children.6 |
