Biography* | | The reverend James Crabtree Religious Life in 1818 Once again Mrs Brandt throws some light on this: "It is only right to say that the parish had long been placed under peculiar circumstances. There had ben no resident rector (for 49 years), and it was left to the spiritual teaching and oversight of a benevolent kind-hearted but too easy-going man (the curate for eight and twenty years). Moreover, he was poor, and indebted to his parishioners for companionship and many kind offices. As might be expected, every denomination of dissent had crept into the cottages, meetings held, and their fine old church in the midst stood utterly deserted" The curate referred to was James Crabtree, in charge of the parish from 1790 to 1818. He may have been "easy-going," but his penmanship and autographs in the register point to a decided firmness of character. An excellent penmam, a calligraphist. As to every "denomination of dissent," the religious thought of England at this time still tended to Calvinism. Not Crabtree, but Geneva was responsible for the meetings and deserted church of which Mrs. Brandt speaks.6 |
