Biography* | | Their eldest son William was delicate, and they were ordered to take him into the country, so my grandfather bought Greenbank, then only a farm-house, surrounded by trees and fields about three miles from the town, and here their other children were born. Before his death my grandfather had intended to greatly enlarge and alter the house, but did not live even to see the plans completed. After his death, his widow carried out the alterations as she believed her husband would have wished, and was somewhat horrified to find how much had been spent in the gratification of her taste.4 |
