She would write to Sir Thomas and he would give it to his wife Mabel saying, you read it I don't know what she is trying to tell me. The best story is the time she sent away for a pair of shoe's and the reply came back. Dear Mrs Baxter, "We don't know what you want but we are sure we have not got it".9 |

His 6th wife Moira was a cousin of his. Her family was supposedly coal merchants from Hoylake. She was a few years younger than him but was soon the master. They lived at Chalfont St Giles in Buckinghamshire. They enjoyed their bridge. She also enjoyed playing golf. She was good enough to play for the Bucks County Ladies.

Mona Joyce Baxter1,2,3
F, #16610, b. 19 July 1912, d. December 2006
Miss Baxter enjoying one of her passions
Relationships | 4th cousin 2 times removed of Robert Alan Bennett 3rd great-granddaughter of William Bennett |
Birth* | 19 July 1912 | Mona Joyce Baxter was born on 19 July 1912 at Freeford Farm, Lichfield, Staffordshire, England, .1,2 |
Biography | 1925 | All of this ended in 1925 when her father gave up the tenancy of the farm and Joyce was devastated at being taken away from her animals at the age of 15. She was now to live in Sutton Coldfield over looking Sutton Park, which was not a bad substitute having many acres in which to walk her dogs. While walking her dogs she watched as people rode their horses and it was not long before she found out that they came from the local riding school in Park Road; and so another chapter started in her life.
The rest of her long life was centered around cats and horses. She had horses for show jumping in the summer and horses for hunting in the winter. She became a very good rider after tuition from her life friend Eddie Fisher, a cavalry man and that is the way she was instructed. She had many good horses well trained and won many competitions.
Her relaxation in the winter was her other love, fox hunting. There are a few stories of her out hunting. There is one of her having a bad fall, breaking a leg, and the farmers carrying her across the fields on a five barred gate ( not very comfortable I would have thought). Another time when the Field Master's horse stopped at a big hedge as did the following horses. A farmer from the back of the field shouted "Let Miss Baxter go she's got a good oss". So she jumped the hedge and the rest of the field were able to proceed. When she gave up riding she followed the hunt in her car until she was 91. She was for some time a Joint Master of South Staffordshire Hunt.1 |
Biography* | between 1912 and 1927 | Joyce spent her childhood at the farm. She loved the animals, especially the cats which had many kittens. In later life her house in Whittington was called Kitten Castle. She loved the dogs, sheep and calves. She spoke of her wicked father who took the calves away from the cows and made them cry. He also sent animals to the cattle market where the drover hit them with sticks. She once let the sheep into a field of new seeds and the shepherd chased her shouting (I break your bleedy neck if I catch you). She spoke of the lovely walks she had on the farm especially Blue Bell Wood where she spent many happy hours. She was sent to boarding school which she hated all she wanted was to be back at the farm with the animals.1 |
(Household Member) Census 1939 Register | 29 September 1939 | She was listed as a member of the household of Sir Thomas Baxter in the 1939 Register at 46 Somerville Road, Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire, England, .2 |
Occupation* | 29 September 1939 | Mona Joyce Baxter was employed in unpaid domestic duties on 29 September 1939.2 |
Residence* | 1982 | She lived in 1982 at Whittington, Staffordshire, England, .1 |
Biography | | Joyce always lived in the same locality as her cousin Roy Baxter. He remembers her coming for Sunday Lunch for 30 years or so, so he got to know her very well. She was always good company but you you soon found out it was best not to argue with her. She was always right and it was easier to agree with her. She nearly always went with Roy and his daughters when they were hunting or point to pointing.
Till the time she died she was still looking after cats feeding them nothing but the best fresh fish and fillet steak. She drove round to neighboring farms and fed their cats for many years. There was the time when at 90 she could not get her car out of reverse gear so she backed all the way back to this farm visiting the hedge a few times on the way.1 |
Biography | | Roy Baxter said "As my father was the youngest, and did not get married till he was 49, all my cousins are older than me and in Joyce's case 27 years so. I have always known her as my Aunty Joyce, as did my wife and children. To her friends she was Rae and to any body else most definitely Miss Baxter. She was a very formidable lady."1 |
Death* | December 2006 | She died in December 2006 at age 94.1 |
