Research Note: On 17 July 2002, RBFO researchers conducted extensive research at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, and determined that it's probable that Ralph Brough's ancestry goes back to Edmund Brough (b. abt. 1602) and Alice of Waterhouse, Leek, Staffordshire. This conclusion was arrived at after checking out various databases, printed books and microfilm/microfiche records pertaining to the possible ancestry of Ralph Brough (born about 1670 in or near Rushton Spencer)--including a computerized radius search of parishes around Rushton Spencer and Leek, an in-depth parish record search (including BT's) of Biddulph, Horton, Rushton and Leek, an index search of parish records for Prestbury, Chester, and a review of various wills and probate records possibly related to Ralph Brough's ancestry. Although the parish register for Rushton Spencer does not cover the period when Ralph Brough was born (in about 1670), there are at least four indicators that support the idea that his Brough ancestry possibly--if not probably--extends into Leek: 1) Extensive research into the records of Rushton Spencer and surrounding parishes could not locate any Ralph Brough--or for that matter any other Brough--who logically or reasonably could have been the father of Ralph Brough (b. abt. 1670), except for a Ralph Brough who was christened in Leek on 7 October 1638. 2) The given name of 'Ralph' appears quite often among the Broughs of Leek, and a number of these families (as shown in previous RBFO research and publications) perpetuated identical given names from one generation to the next. 3) Parish and civil records show that there were substantial associations and connections between the Broughs of Rushton Spencer and Leek. 4) The ancestry of Martha Holland (wife of Ralph Brough--chr. 1700/1701--who was the son of Ralph Brough born in about 1670) goes back to Leek.1
