Milit-Beg* | 31 October 1917 | He began military service on 31 October 1917 at RNVR Mersey Division, Liverpool, Lancashire, England, , His service number was M Z/4722. The M denotes the RNVR Mersey Division and the Z denotes he enrolled after the start of hostilities. His first listed rank was OS (Ordinary Seaman.)8,9 |
Biography* | between 31 October 1917 and 17 February 1919 | Frank enrolled in the RNVR as soon as he was 18 and therfore only served during the last year of the conflict. He never served overseas but used his skills acquired through his training in the Post Office to act as a telegraphist. He enrolled in Liverpool on 31 October 1917 when he was described as 5 feet 11 and half inches tall with a 34 1/4" chest with brown hair and eyes and a dark complexion. His occupation was listed as a sorting clerk and telegraphist. He undertook his basic training on HMS Eagle in the Mersey Docks. HMS Eagle was a 74-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on 27 February 1804 at Northfleet. In 1830 she was reduced to a 50-gun ship, and became a training ship in 1860. She was renamed HMS Eaglet in 1919, when she was the Royal Naval Reserve training centre for North West England. Eaglet was destroyed by fire in 1926. On 18 Jan 1918 he was posted to HMS Victory VI for training as a naval telegrapher. He arrived as an Ordinary Seaman but was listed as an Ordinary Telegrapher on his next posting. During WW1 Crystal Palace was used as a training establishment for the Royal Navy. It was officially known as H.M.S. Victory VI, and informally as HMS Crystal Palace. 125,000 officers and men were trained here. It was during his time at Crystal Palace he returned home to be married in Warrington. On 14 May 1918 he left training and was posted to HMS President IV Eastern where he served until 1 July 1918. This was the London accounting base, in operation between 1918 and 1926, handling the accounts of the commands of the Coastguard ships and the Reserves. Its exact location is unknown. On leaving that posting he moved to HMS Pembroke I on 2 July 1918 where he stayed until the 21 July. This was another shore establishment based at Chatham. After leaving Pembroke he was posted to HMS Wallington on 22 July 1918. My current research shows that Wallington was the Auxilliary Patrol base at Grimsby. On arrival he was still an Ordinary Telegrapher but by 20 October 1918 he was promoted to Telegrapher. This was his final posting until demob on 17 Feb 1919.9 |
