Biography* | 12 June 1935 | Mr. Sydney Wilson Thompstone, C.M.G., late P.M.O., Northern Nigeria, died suddenly at Deloraine, St. Saviour, Jersey, on June 12, at the age of 72. The son of the Rev. E. Thompstone vicar of Knutton, Staffs, he was born on March 6, 1863, and was educated at Newcastle High School. Afterwards he studied medicine at University College, London, qualified at Glasgow and Edinburgh, and later obtained the fellowships of the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons of Edinburgh, and the diploma in public health of Cambridge.
After a period as house surgeon of the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, he was appointed district medical officer in the Oil Rivers Protectorate (new Southern Nigeria) in 1893, and was acting principal medical officer on five occasions. From 1903 to 1911 he was P.M.O. of Northern Nigeria, being made a C.M.G. in 1906. He was at one time in charge of the public health laboratory at Old Calabar. In the War he served as deputy commissioner for medical services in Shropshire. To professional journals he contributed articles on tropical diseases. He was a member of the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club. He leaves a widow and one son.
Mr. A. C. Douglas writes:- The sudden death of Sydney Thompstone, who was one of the small band of West African pioneers with whom I served in the old British Vice-Consulate in Opobo in 1895, fills me with sorrow, but recalls many pleasant recollections. I recall from a personal experience his discovery of the greater activities of the mosquito, and how in Calabar he discovered the complaint known as "Calabar Swellings," with which Sir Patrick Manson at first refused to credit him, but which he afterwards acknowledged in his book on tropical medicine. It is, however, rather as a friend that I best remember Thompstone: In 1S95 he pulled me through a dozen doses of fever, and during my convalescence taught me boat-sailing and revolver-shooting. He ran away to sea at the age of 14, and served in sailing-ships before the mast, visiting Australia (which he crossed on foot), Canada, and the Western States of America. Finally he settled down to medicine and acquired those brilliant qualifications which he gave to the service of Nigeria.6 |
Probate* | 14 August 1935 | His estate was probated on 14 August 1935 at London, Middlesex, England, .16 |
